Students in Youth Orchestra Salinas gear up for winter concert

Excited but a little nervous, that’s how many of the young musicians at Youth Orchestra Salinas (YOSAL), are feeling while preparing for this weekend’s holiday concert. A big day for roughly 200 students. YOSAL is a nonprofit that offers classical music education as an avenue for social change. From singing to playing instruments, everything is free. YOSAL Artistic Director Dank Drusko said, “Learning music or an instrument like this requires a lot of steps, a lot of money, especially lessons are expensive, instruments are expensive.”Although students are learning a lot more than just musical notes.“We learn how to interact with each other, we listen to each other, we let somebody talk basically through playing an instrument,” Drusko said. “I was like kind of shy, didn’t want to talk kind of, but I got used to it because people here were nice and kind of and made me be included here,” said Mackenzie Amador, a YOSAL student who plays the violin. It’s a program that music teachers there say transforms lives.Music teacher, Eliodoro Vallecillo said, “It teaches discipline and other aspects that help kids succeed in life in general. I’m part of the community. You know, a lot of kids that I grew up with ended up, you know, going the wrong path, unfortunately.”This weekend students will perform alongside their teachers and other musicians, for a nearly sold-out show.
