Questlove has announced a new MasterClass on DJing and music curation. The class is currently available on MasterClass’ website. Check out the trailer below. (Pitchfork earns a commission from purchases made through affiliate links on our site.)
Questlove’s class will breakdown the basics of DJing—from selecting records to scratching and segues. He’ll also give a rundown of his equipment list and cover live loop creation, phasing, beat juggling and more. In addition to DJing and music curation, Questlove will explore the connectivity of music, sharing his knowledge to teach students how to increase their music vocabulary and craft the perfect playlist.
“It’s one thing to listen to music, but it’s another thing to embrace it and have it come to you,” Questlove said in a press release. “Nothing will take the place of the passion that I feel for music, and I hope my MasterClass will open up a portal in your heart so that you learn to love music, find it and appreciate it.”
“Questlove’s storied career and unparalleled knowledge and passion for music has made him a music icon and one of the most influential individuals in the industry,” MasterClass founder and CEO David Rogier added. “In his MasterClass, members will gain a deeper understanding of how to listen to and absorb music so they can deconstruct songs and gain a deeper appreciation of everything they hear.”
Questlove recently premiered his directorial debut Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), a documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, at Sundance. The film won the festival’s esteemed Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award and was picked up by Searchlight Pictures and Hulu. He is also slated to direct a forthcoming doc about Sly Stone.
